damp
Car springs have dampers attached to them. Were it not for these dampers the car would bounce up and down like a yo-yo for a long time after it hit a
bump in the road. The dampers do nothing to reduce the effectiveness 1.... the springs in absorbing the impact of 2.... bump but they act to prevent the springs 3..... to oscillate. Without these dampers or shock absorbers 4..... springs would oscillate until all the energy of 5...... bump had been dissipated as heat through the 6... in the spring itself. The diagram shows a damped oscillation of a spring compared to an undamped one. 7..... practice the dampers are friction or viscosity devices.
8...... are times when oscillations can be inconvenient. 9...... people have large swings of mood from being elated 10...... being depressed. Some of those who read books 11....... psychiatry even consider themselves to be manic-depressives. In 12..... many of these mood swings are comparatively normal 13...... people living in the stress of modern society. 14....... can, however, be an indication of depression. It seems 15....... the increasing stress of life produces chemical changes 16...... the brain that lead to those mood swings. 17...... do not know exactly what is happening but 18..... may be that the system is forced into 19...... hunting state (see under 'Hunting'). As regards treatment it might seem 20. ....... to try to retain the upswings and get 21..... of the downswings. In practice it is easier 22..... try to damp down the swings altogether and 23..... try to restore the person to a 'normal' 24..... (if there is such a thing). If, however, 25.... damping down is overdone then all mood fluctuations 26.... be lost: but treatment is rarely that effective. 27.... price of many commodities such 28..... cocoa, wool, beef, grain and copper fluctuates wildly. 29...... may seem hard to understand since the world's 30........ of these items does not fluctuate to the 31....... degree. It is true that poor harvests can 32...... shortages but many people suspect that the wild 33....... are caused by the structure of the market. 34. ...... buy commodity futures ahead and hope that at 35....... time of delivery the price will have risen 36...... that they make a profit. Conversely they promise 37..... sell at a certain price and hope that 38. ..... called upon to do so the buying price 39..... have fallen. There is a growing feeling that these artificial fluctuations 40. ..... damping down.
